Medicare Open Enrollment 2027: Understanding Your Options Before You Choose

Oct 7
4 min read

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period for 2027 coverage runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. For Medicare beneficiaries, this is an important opportunity to review current coverage, understand what may be changing for the year ahead, and make sure your plan continues to align with your healthcare needs, lifestyle and financial situation.

At Kingsgate Financial Insurance Agency, we believe the right Medicare decision starts with understanding your options, not simply renewing the same plan year after year. Medicare can feel complicated. Between Original Medicare, Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage, it can be difficult to know how the pieces fit together.

Our role is to simplify the process, explain the differences and help you compare your options with confidence.

Start With the Basics: How Medicare Works

Original Medicare consists of two primary parts:Medicare Part A provides hospital insurance, while Medicare Part B provides medical insurance for services such as doctor visits and outpatient care.

From there, beneficiaries generally have choices for how they structure additional coverage. Part C, or Medicare Advantage, combines Part A and Part B coverage through a private Medicare-approved plan and may also include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits. Part D provides prescription drug coverage.

For many people, one of the biggest decisions is whether to pair Original Medicare with Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan or choose a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage

While both options can help manage healthcare expenses, they work differently.

A Medicare Supplement plan works alongside Original Medicare. Original Medicare pays its portion of covered healthcare costs first, and the Medicare Supplement plan helps pay eligible remaining costs according to the policy. These plans generally offer broad access to providers who accept Medicare, but prescription drug coverage and dental, vision or other benefits typically require separate coverage.

Medicare Supplement plans also generally carry a separate monthly premium. Depending on the plan and your circumstances, this approach may appeal to someone who values predictable coverage and greater flexibility in choosing Medicare-participating providers.

A Medicare Advantage plan, on the other hand, is a private Medicare-approved plan that provides your Part A and Part B benefits. Many plans bundle additional benefits into one plan and may include prescription drug, dental, vision and hearing coverage.

Medicare Advantage plans may have lower premiums than Medicare Supplement coverage, but members generally pay copays, coinsurance or deductibles as they use medical services. Plans may also use provider networks and require referrals or prior authorizations for certain services.

Importantly, Medicare Advantage plans set an annual maximum for covered medical out-of-pocket expenses. Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans also have different rules, costs and enrollment considerations, which is why understanding more than the monthly premium is important.

Your Medicare Plan Deserves an Annual Review

Your healthcare needs can change from one year to the next—and Medicare plans can change, too.

Premiums, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, copays and plan benefits may be different for 2027. A plan that worked well this year may still be appropriate, but it shouldn't be assumed that it remains the right fit without reviewing the details.

That is why Kingsgate Financial takes a broader approach to Medicare planning.

Rather than looking at one feature or focusing exclusively on premium, we help clients consider the complete picture: their doctors and preferred hospitals, prescription medications, anticipated healthcare needs, travel and lifestyle, budget, and the potential out-of-pocket costs associated with different coverage options.

To help you decide, we simplify the differences between Medicare plans so you can understand what’s covered, what it costs and how each option fits your individual needs.

Medicare Is Part of Your Bigger Financial Picture

At Kingsgate Financial, we don't view Medicare coverage as an isolated decision.
