What is Medicare? Who qualifies?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed primarily for people age 65 and older. It also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. Medicare helps pay for hospital care, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and other essential health services.

You may be eligible if you meet any of the following:

Age 65 or older and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Under 65 with a qualifying disability and receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for at least 24 months

Any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

Spouse of a qualified individual, in some cases

What to Know about Enrollment:  Timing matters.

Your first chance to sign up for Medicare begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birth month, and ends 3 months after—a total of 7 months.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

Switch Medicare Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare. Available January 1 to March 31 annually.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D plans. Runs from October 15 to December 7 each year.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Triggered by life events like moving, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for Medicaid. Let you enroll or adjust coverage outside standard windows.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

If you missed your Initial Enrollment, you can sign up for Parts A & B between January 1 and March 31, with coverage starting July 1.
